How do Turbo Chargers Work?
To keep things simple a Turbo Charger is able to increase the horsepower of your car in a dramatic way because because it is compressing air into your engine at high pressures. This is done by powering a turbine (what a Turbo Charger essentially is) using your engines exhaust gases. The advantage of compressing air is that it lets the engine squeeze more air into each cylinder. A stock engine is very capable of handling the extra pressure that a Turbo Charger puts on your car’s engine. As long as you do not tune the Turbo Charger to put an excess amount of pressure on your engine (usually 6-8psi is a safe amount of pressure for a stock engine) you will be fine with stock engine internals. If you plan on putting anything past 8psi of pressure on your engine, however, you should ideally look into forged engine internals.
As long as a Turbo Charger is properly installed and have a regular flow of oil, Turbo Chargers are extremely reliable. Do not let others tell you otherwise. There are millions of people around the world who drive turbo charged vehicles as their daily drivers with no extra-ordinary problems.
A Turbo Charger generally adds about 40%-60% more horsepower to your stock performance car. These numbers can be increased with proper tuning, and of course further modifications to your car (ie: exhaust system, headers etc.).
